    Hello (standard, to anyone)

    Tip: konnichiwa — Safe standard hello for strangers, shops and new people.

    元気?

    How have you been? / How's it going?

    Tip: genki? — Friendly check-in with someone you already know.

    うん、元気だよ

    I'm good / I've been well

    Tip: un, genki da yo — The usual reply — then ask them back.

    ありがとう!

    Thanks!

    Tip: arigatō! — Everyday thanks for friends and small favours.

    いえいえ

    You're welcome / Not at all

    Tip: ie ie — Light, modest reply when someone thanks you.

    ごめん!

    Sorry! (small things)

    Tip: gomen! — Quick sorry for small things, like bumping into someone.

    すみません!

    Excuse me! (to get attention)

    Tip: sumimasen! — Get attention: call a waiter or stop someone in the street.

    もう一度お願いします

    Could you say that again, please?

    Tip: mō ichido onegaishimasu — When you didn't catch something. Say it with a smile.

    もう少しゆっくりお願いします

    Could you speak a bit more slowly?

    Tip: mō sukoshi yukkuri onegaishimasu — Natives talk fast — this one is a lifesaver.

    I don't really understand

    Tip: yoku wakaranai desu — Honest, polite way to say you're lost in the conversation.

    Really?! / No way!

    Tip: maji de? — Surprised reaction to news — very common among friends.

    Tip: ii ne! — Happy reaction to good news or a good idea.

    Tip: sō sō — Shows you agree while the other person is talking.

    Tip: chotto matte — Ask someone to hold on a moment.
