On Stage with a French Amateur Theatre Troupe

Audition, rehearse and survive opening night with an amateur theatre company putting on a French farce.

France has thousands of troupes de théâtre amateur, mostly run as associations that rehearse in an MJC or a salle des fêtes and perform a couple of times a year, often a comedy by Feydeau or Molière. The last full run-through before opening is la générale, and the director is called le metteur en scène. Theatre superstition is strong: never wish an actor « bonne chance », say « merde » instead, and avoid wearing green on stage.
