Saying Sorry in France

Apologise to a stranger, smooth things over with a neighbour and accept an apology gracefully.

French has several ways to say sorry: « Pardon » for a quick bump in the street, « Excusez-moi » to get attention or apologise politely, and « Je suis désolé » when you really mean it. With strangers and neighbours you use vous. If you plan a noisy party in a block of flats, it's customary to put a note in the hall or under your neighbours' doors in advance, and after a problem a small gesture like flowers goes a long way.
