Reporting a Theft at a French Police Station
File a complaint after a theft, describe what happened, and leave with the receipt your bank, insurer and consulate will ask for.
In towns you report crimes at the commissariat (police nationale); in the countryside it's the gendarmerie. For a theft you porter plainte: you can start with a pré-plainte en ligne to save time, then sign it in person and leave with a récépissé de dépôt de plainte, which your insurer, bank or consulate will ask for. Block a stolen bank card straight away by calling your bank (faire opposition), and in an emergency dial 17 or 112.
