Choosing a Lycée After Collège in France

Talk through the choice between the general and vocational tracks, catchment lycées, rankings and deadlines in France.

In France pupils choose their path at the end of 3e, the last year of collège at about 15: either seconde générale et technologique at a lycée, or the voie professionnelle leading to a bac pro or CAP. Places in state lycées are allocated through the Affelnet system: families rank their choices (les vœux) online in spring, and pupils living in a lycée's catchment area generally have priority. The professeur principal and the school psychologist help with the decision, and most lycées hold open days between February and April.
