Writing Emails That Sound French
Open, chase, attach and sign off emails and letters with the formulas French readers expect.
French professional emails open with « Bonjour Madame Leroy, » or, when you don't know the name, « Madame, Monsieur, », and close with « Cordialement » or the warmer « Bien cordialement ». Formal letters to administrations, landlords or employers still end with a long set formula such as « Je vous prie d'agréer... l'expression de mes salutations distinguées ». Use vous with anyone you haven't been invited to tutoyer, and expect office phrases like « suite à », « ci-joint » and « je me permets de vous relancer ».
