Getting Seen at a French Emergency Department

Explain an accident and your symptoms to the triage nurse, cope with the wait, and understand the doctor at a French A&E.

In France you go to les urgences at a hospital; for anything serious call 15 (the SAMU) or 112, and many emergency departments now ask you to call 15 first, especially at night, so a doctor can direct you. On arrival a triage nurse assesses you and the most urgent cases go first, so waits of several hours are common for minor injuries. Bring your carte Vitale and ID; since 2022 a flat fee of about 20 € applies if you aren't admitted, usually covered by your mutuelle.
