Market Day and the Supermarket
Buy fruit, cheese and bread at a French market stall and get through the supermarket checkout.
Most French towns have an open-air market once or twice a week, where stallholders serve you and you shouldn't touch the fruit unless they invite you to. Stall and shop staff say vous and expect a « bonjour » before anything else. Single-use plastic bags are banned, so bring your own bag; at the supermarket you'll be asked if you have the store's loyalty card, and many shops have self-service tills.
