Adopting and Living with a Cat in France
Adopt a cat from a shelter, talk about food and litter, and ask a neighbour to look after it.
Many people in France adopt from the SPA or a local refuge, where the cat comes vaccinated, sterilised and microchipped for an adoption fee of around 100–250 €. Most city cats are chats d'appartement that never go outside, and when you go away a neighbour often comes in to feed them, or you book a pet sitter or a pension pour chats. Pet shops and supermarkets sell croquettes (dry food), pâtée (wet food) and litière (litter).
