Leaks, Drills and Leroy Merlin: DIY in a French Flat

Phrases to deal with small breakdowns at home, borrow tools, shop at a DIY store and call a tradesperson.

French DIY (le bricolage) revolves around big stores like Leroy Merlin, Castorama and Brico Dépôt, where staff will happily advise you. If you rent, small maintenance repairs such as tap washers, bulbs or blocked drains are legally the tenant's job, while bigger repairs fall to the landlord. Before any work, ask a plumber or electrician for a written devis (quote), and beware of emergency callout ads stuck in letterboxes, which often overcharge.
