Keeping Your French Flat Safe

Talk to neighbours about a break-in, get a locksmith's quote and protect your home before you go on holiday.

Most French apartment buildings have a door code (« digicode ») and an intercom, and residents are wary of letting strangers in. Before going away you can sign up for the free « Opération Tranquillité Vacances », where the police or gendarmerie patrol past your home. Locked out? Choose a locksmith carefully and ask for a quote first, since emergency locksmith scams are common; in a building with shared ownership, problems with the main door go to the « syndic », the building's managing agent.
