Viewing a House to Buy in France
The expressions buyers, partners and estate agents use when you fall for a French house, spot the catches and talk money.
Buying in France goes through an agence immobilière or a sale « entre particuliers », then a notaire handles the deal; on an older property expect « frais de notaire » of around 7 to 8 % of the price on top. Every listing must show the DPE energy rating from A to G, and badly insulated homes rated F or G are nicknamed « passoires thermiques ». Once you sign the « compromis de vente », you have a 10-day cooling-off period.
