Boxes, Vans and the État des Lieux: Moving Flat in France

Phrases to organise a move in France, from asking friends for help to handing back the keys to your letting agent.

To leave a rented flat in France you send your landlord a préavis: one month for a furnished flat or in big cities like Lyon and Paris, usually three months elsewhere. On the last day you do an état des lieux de sortie with the landlord or agency, comparing the flat with the inspection report from when you moved in; the dépôt de garantie must be returned within one month if nothing differs, two if there is damage. Parking a van in the street may need an autorisation de stationnement from the mairie, and La Poste offers paid mail forwarding.
