Organising a Street Party in France

Plan a Fête des voisins or a vide-grenier with your neighbours, from the permit at the mairie to sharing out the jobs.

Every year in late May or early June, France celebrates the « Fête des voisins », when neighbours share food in the courtyard or the street. A « vide-grenier » (a street car-boot sale) needs a declaration to the mairie, and using the pavement or closing a street requires an « autorisation d'occupation du domaine public », so ask well in advance. Everyone usually brings a dish to share, and the building's syndic or gardien often helps with tables and posters.
