Behind the Ballot Box: Helping Run a French Polling Station
Phrases to understand who does what at a French polling station and to take part as a volunteer clerk or vote counter.
Each French bureau de vote is run by a président, often the mayor or a local councillor, with at least two assesseurs and a secrétaire; any registered voter can volunteer through the mairie. Voters show ID in towns of 1,000 inhabitants or more, must go through the isoloir, put their envelope in the transparent urne, then sign the liste d'émargement, and the président announces « A voté ». Polls usually close at 18 h, or 20 h in big cities, and the dépouillement (count) is public, done by volunteer scrutateurs chosen among the voters present.
