Chatting About the Weather in France
Break the ice with neighbours and shopkeepers by talking about the cold, the rain, the heatwave and the forecast.
In France the weather is the safest small-talk topic with neighbours, shopkeepers and colleagues, and you use vous with anyone you don't know well. Météo-France issues colour-coded weather warnings (vigilance jaune, orange, rouge) that the news and your neighbours will mention. Temperatures are always in Celsius, and people usually drop the word « degrés ».
