Your First French Tax Return

Get a tax number, understand withholding at source and ask the tax office the right questions about your first return.

Everyone living in France files an annual déclaration de revenus each spring, usually online at impots.gouv.fr, even though income tax has been taken from salaries at source since 2019. Newcomers without a numéro fiscal can contact their local Service des impôts des particuliers, at the centre des finances publiques, often by appointment. Married couples and PACS partners file jointly, and the number of parts in the household lowers the tax; the result arrives in the summer as an avis d'imposition.

Tax forms laid out with a calculator and magnifying glass on a wooden surface, perfect for finance themes.
