Hedging Your Estimates at Work in France

Say 'probably', 'roughly' and 'don't hold me to it' the way French colleagues do when the boss wants a date.

In French workplaces, giving a firm deadline you can't keep is worse than sounding cautious, so people hedge a lot: à vue de nez, sous réserve, normalement. « Normalement » is the classic one and really means 'if nothing goes wrong'. In most tech teams people use tu, including with their manager, and drop the « ne » when speaking.

Je suis pas sûr, je vérifie.

I'm not sure, let me check.

  2. 2

I don't know, but I'll find out and get back to you.

  3. 3

Je dirais deux semaines, à peu près.

    I'd say about two weeks.

  4. 4

Je dis ça sous toute réserve.

    Don't hold me to that.

  5. 5

À vue de nez, je dirais oui.

Off the top of my head, I'd say yes.

  6. 6

In principle, yes, but it needs confirming.

  7. 7

Je me trompe peut-être, mais ça me paraît risqué.

I might be wrong, but it looks risky to me.

  8. 8

C'est une estimation au doigt mouillé.

    It's a rough guess.

  9. 9

Rien n'est gravé dans le marbre.

    Nothing is set in stone.

  10. 10

    Je m'avance un peu, là.

I'm going out on a limb here.

  11. 11

    Honnêtement, j'en sais rien.

    Honestly, I have no idea.

  12. 12

    Ça reste à voir.

    That remains to be seen.

  13. 13

It should be OK, touch wood.

  14. 14

    Je peux rien te promettre.

    I can't promise you anything.

  15. 15

C'est à prendre avec des pincettes.

Take it with a pinch of salt.

  16. 16

Si tout va bien, d'ici vendredi.

If all goes well, by Friday.

  17. 17

It's not my area, I don't want to say anything stupid.

  18. 18

    Grosso modo, c'est ça.

    Roughly, that's it.

  19. 19

    I wouldn't swear to it.

  20. 20

Let's say it's likely, but not certain.
