Healthcare and Insurance in Spain

Understand public healthcare, register at your health centre and compare private health insurance in Spain.

Spain's public healthcare is free at the point of use once you're registered with the Seguridad Social: you get a 'tarjeta sanitaria', a GP ('médico de cabecera') at your local 'centro de salud', and cheaper prescriptions. Many people also pay for private insurance to skip waiting lists, with a monthly fee ('cuota'), waiting periods ('carencia') and small co-payments. The cards follow a newcomer in Valencia asking a friend for advice, registering at the health centre and calling an insurer.
