Turning Forty in Spain

Spanish expressions for joking, moaning and celebrating when you or a friend hit forty.

In Spain a fortieth birthday is a good excuse for friends to book a bar terrace, bring a cake and tease the birthday person mercilessly, then drag the party out until the small hours. People joke about la crisis de los cuarenta, being a carroza and los años que no perdonan. These expressions follow a man turning forty in Madrid, from a coffee with a friend to the party and the sobremesa the day after.
