Filling in forms: instructions and problems

Full sentences for form instructions, signatures, attachments and the things that go wrong with e-forms.

These are the sentences printed on Swedish forms and the ones you'll need when something goes wrong: block capitals, guardians' signatures, files too big to upload, and pages that log you out.

    Var hittar jag blanketten på deras hemsida?

    Where do I find the form on their website?

    Tip: Swedes say 'home page' for a whole website.

    Ladda ner blanketten, skriv ut den och fyll i den för hand.

    Download the form, print it out and fill it in by hand.

    Tip: Three particle verbs: 'load down', 'write out', 'fill in'.

    Fyll i blanketten med tryckbokstäver.

    Fill in the form in block capitals.

    Tip: Literally 'with print letters'.

    Skriv ditt namn som det står i passet.

    Write your name as it appears in your passport.

    Tip: 'As it stands' = as it appears. Swedish uses the definite form instead of 'your'.

    Jag har inget mellannamn, så jag lämnar den rutan tom.

    I don't have a middle name, so I'll leave that box empty.

    Tip: 'Leave something empty': the adjective goes after the noun.

    If the question doesn't apply to you, you can skip it.

    Tip: 'Jump over' = skip. After the if-clause, the verb comes first.

    Tip: 'Det' + noun without the definite ending before a relative clause is formal Swedish.

    Tip: Definite-style adjective after a possessive: 'my new' takes -a.

    Give a phone number where we can reach you during the day.

    Tip: Formal 'state, specify' is a typical form verb. 'Daytime' needs no preposition.

    I filled in the wrong box; how do I correct it?

    Tip: 'Wrong' works as an adjective before nouns without changing form.

    Glöm inte att skriva under och datera blanketten.

    Don't forget to sign and date the form.

    Tip: Both verbs share one infinitive marker. The second is borrowed, with normal Swedish endings.

    Blanketten ska skrivas under av båda vårdnadshavarna.

    The form must be signed by both guardians.

    Tip: Passive infinitive with -s. A legal guardian is literally 'custody holder'.

    By signing, I certify that the information is correct.

    Tip: 'Through to sign' = by signing. Verb before subject after the opening phrase.

    Tip: The noun has no extra definite ending: same form for 'an' and 'the'.

    Tip: The official term for any ID: passport, ID card, driving licence.

    Tip: No articles before the file types.

    Tip: Swedes use the definite form for their own phone: 'with the phone'.

    Tip: 'Too' and 'in order to' are spelled the same; the infinitive is passive.

    The application isn't complete until all attachments have arrived.

    Tip: 'Not ... until' uses a special conjunction.

    Tip: 'Before' as a conjunction. The verb for 'be correct' is the everyday one.

    Tip: 'Leave in' = hand in.
