Small Words That Make You Sound Swedish

ju, väl, nog, liksom, typ — the untranslatable little words that carry the tone of every Swedish sentence.

Swedes season every sentence with small modal particles that have no English equivalent. They don't change the facts — they change the tone. Mastering them is the difference between correct Swedish and natural Swedish.

  1. 1

    ju

as we both know (shared-knowledge marker)

Tip: 'Det är ju fredag!' = it IS Friday (as we both know). Signals the obvious; can sound reproachful.

  2. 2

    väl

presumably / I suppose (seeking agreement)

Tip: 'Du kommer väl?' = you're coming, right? Softens a statement into a hopeful question.

  3. 3

    nog

    probably / I reckon (hedging)

Tip: 'Det går nog bra' = it'll probably be fine. Confident guess, softer than 'säkert'.

  4. 4

    liksom

    like / sort of (filler)

Tip: 'Det var liksom konstigt' = it was, like, weird. Vague-ifier; heavy use marks casual speech.

  5. 5

    typ

like / roughly / kind of

Tip: 'typ tio personer' = like ten people. Also a standalone reply: 'typ' = kind of, I guess.

  6. 6

    alltså

    so / I mean (sentence-opener)

Tip: 'Alltså, jag vet inte...' = I mean, I don't know. Opens hedges and rants alike.

  7. 7

    va

    you know / right (tag)

Tip: 'Kul, va?' = fun, right? Tag question; alone, 'Va?' = what? (blunt but normal).

  8. 8

    visserligen

    indeed / admittedly (concessive)

Tip: 'Visserligen dyrt, men bra' = admittedly expensive, but good. Pairs with 'men'.

  9. 9

    säkert

    surely / for sure (assumption)

Tip: 'Han är säkert trött' = he's surely tired. Ironically: 'jaa, säkert' = yeah, right.

  10. 10

    tyvärr

    unfortunately

Tip: Also the standalone Swedish 'no can do': 'Tyvärr.' closes the matter politely.

  11. 11

    gärna

happily / gladly / by all means

Tip: 'Jag kommer gärna' = I'd love to come. Answering 'gärna!' = yes please.

  12. 12

    faktiskt

    actually / really (contradiction marker)

Tip: 'Det var faktiskt bra' = it was actually good (despite expectations). Can sound defensive.

  13. 13

    ändå

anyway / still / all the same

Tip: 'Det var kul ändå' = it was fun anyway. Salvages a sentence after a setback.

  14. 14

    bara

    just / simply (imperative softener)

Tip: 'Kom bara!' = just come! Also minimizer: 'jag bara undrar' = I'm just wondering.

  15. 15

    tja

    well ... (hesitation opener)

Tip: 'Tja, vad ska man säga...' = well, what can you say. Also a casual hello among guys.

  16. 16

    äsch

    oh well / never mind

Tip: 'Äsch, det gör inget' = oh well, no matter. Brushes something off.

  17. 17

    oj

    wow / gosh (impressed)

Tip: 'Oj!' = oops/wow. Doubled 'oj oj oj' = my my my. The most Swedish sound there is.

  18. 18

    usch

    ugh / yuck

Tip: 'Usch vad kallt!' = ugh, how cold! Disgust or discomfort; 'fy' is stronger.

  19. 19

    kom igen

come on / you know (persuading)

Tip: Direct loan-feel of 'come on': 'kom igen, det blir kul!'

  20. 20

    visst

    sure / of course (granting)

Tip: 'Visst kan du låna den' = of course you can borrow it. Tag use: 'Visst är det fint?'

  21. 21

    då så

right! / that's settled (closing word)

Tip: 'Då så!' wraps up a decision or a meeting. 'då' alone ends arrangements: 'vi ses då!'

  22. 22

    i så fall

    in that case / then

Tip: 'I så fall kommer jag' = in that case I'll come. Spoken fast as 'isåfall'.

  23. 23

    på nåt sätt

kind of / in some way

Tip: 'Det känns fel på nåt sätt' = it feels wrong somehow. 'nåt' = spoken 'något'.

  24. 24

    precis

    exactly / precisely (agreement)

Tip: The default 'exactly!' in conversation — Swedes say it constantly, often doubled: 'precis precis'.

  25. 25

    absolut

    absolutely (strong yes)

Tip: 'Absolut!' = definitely! The enthusiastic yes; 'självklart' = obviously/of course.
