At Migrationsverket: extending your permit

A booked appointment to extend a residence permit — reception, the case that is 'still under processing', the right to work while waiting, biometrics and the missing document.

An appointment at Migrationsverket is mostly waiting and vocabulary: ärende (case), handläggningstid (processing time), tillstånd (permit), komplettera (supply a missing document). This deck walks through one extension appointment so the words are familiar before the day that matters.

    Jag har en bokad tid klockan tio.

    I have a booked appointment at ten.

    Tip: 'en bokad tid' = a booked slot; say it at reception.

    What is the errand about?

    Tip: 'gälla' = concern; ärende = case/errand. Standard desk question.

    Jag ska förlänga mitt uppehållstillstånd.

    I'm going to extend my residence permit.

    Tip: förlänga = extend; uppehållstillstånd = residence permit.

    Har du med dig passet och beslutet?

    Do you have the passport and the decision with you?

    Tip: beslut = the decision letter from your previous application.

    Everything is here in the folder.

    Tip: mapp = folder; 'finns' for things that exist/are located.

    Sätt dig så länge.

    Have a seat for now.

    Tip: 'så länge' = for the time being / meanwhile.

    You will be called.

    Tip: bli + past participle = passive; 'uppropad' from ropa upp.

    Tip: 'Varsågod och' + imperative = please go ahead and...

    I submitted the application in March.

    Tip: 'skicka in' = submit; ansökan = application (definite form is the same).

    I haven't heard anything.

    Tip: 'hört något' = heard anything; the polite way to say 'no update'.

    The case is still under processing.

    Tip: The status you will read on every letter: under handläggning.

    Hur lång är handläggningstiden just nu?

    How long is the processing time right now?

    Tip: handläggningstid = processing time; 'just nu' = right now.

    Count on a few more months.

    Tip: 'räkna med' = count on/expect; 'till' at the end = more/additional.

    Tip: 'får' = am allowed to; 'under tiden' = meanwhile.
