The base form goes with en-words (en stor bil), -t is added for ett-words (ett stort hus), and -a for plurals and definite phrases (stora bilar, den stora bilen).

The ending follows the noun after är too: Bilen är stor, Huset är stort, Bilarna är stora.

Common mistake

Bil is an en-word, so no ending: en stor bil, not en stort bil. Plurals take -a: två röda bilar, not två röd bilar.
