Skulle: One Word, Five Jobs

Why skulle feels slippery: it is both the conditional (would) and the past of ska (was going to). Sorted by job, with the pairs that get confused placed side by side.

Skulle is hard not because the form is hard — it never changes — but because English splits its work across would, should, was going to and was supposed to. Learn it by job, not by translation. The order here runs from the two you need today to the ones that look backwards.

  1. 1

Jag skulle vilja ha en kopp kaffe.

I would like a cup of coffee.

Tip: JOB 1 — asking for something politely. skulle vilja ha is the single most useful skulle phrase there is

  2. 2

    Skulle du kunna hjälpa mig?

    Could you help me?

Tip: JOB 2 — a polite request. skulle du kunna + infinitive; softer than kan du

  3. 3

Skulle det gå bra att betala med kort?

Would it be alright to pay by card?

Tip: skulle det gå bra = would it be okay; very common in shops and cafés

  4. 4

    Det skulle vara trevligt.

    That would be nice.

Tip: a wish rather than a request

  5. 5

Om jag hade tid skulle jag hjälpa dig.

If I had time I would help you.

Tip: JOB 3 — unreal present. The om-clause takes the past tense (hade), the main clause takes skulle. Note the inversion: skulle jag, not jag skulle

  6. 6

Om jag vore dig skulle jag vänta.

If I were you I would wait.

Tip: vore is the old subjunctive of vara, kept alive almost only in this phrase

  7. 7

    Vad skulle du göra?

    What would you do?

Tip: the hypothetical question — no om-clause needed

  8. 8

Han sa att han skulle komma.

    He said he would come.

Tip: JOB 4 — the past of ska. He said 'jag ska komma'; reported from the past it becomes skulle

  9. 9

    Jag skulle ha ringt.

    I should have called.

Tip: JOB 5 — past regret. skulle ha + supine (ringt). This is the 'should have' one

  10. 10

Vi skulle åka, men bilen gick sönder.

We were going to go, but the car broke down.

Tip: the plan that did not happen — English needs 'was going to', Swedish just uses skulle

  11. 11

    Tåget skulle gå klockan sju.

The train was supposed to leave at seven.

Tip: an expectation that reality broke — timetables, appointments, deliveries

  12. 12

Hon skulle just gå när telefonen ringde.

She was just about to leave when the phone rang.

Tip: skulle just + infinitive = was on the point of

  13. 13

    Du skulle nog vila lite.

You should probably rest a bit.

Tip: JOB 6 — softened advice. nog does the softening; without it this sounds blunt

  14. 14

    Det skulle kunna vara han.

    It could be him.

Tip: skulle kunna = might, could — a guess, not a request

  15. 15

    Jag skulle inte säga så.

    I wouldn't say that.

Tip: inte goes after skulle in a main clause

  16. 16

    Varför skulle jag göra det?

    Why would I do that?

Tip: often indignant — tone carries it

  17. 17

    Det skulle jag aldrig göra.

    I would never do that.

Tip: det is fronted for emphasis, so the verb comes before the subject: skulle jag

  18. 18

Jag trodde att du skulle komma.

I thought you were going to come.

Tip: past thought about a future that did not arrive — the mild reproach version

  19. 19

    Skulle vi kunna ses imorgon?

    Could we meet tomorrow?

Tip: a suggestion, softer than ska vi ses?

  20. 20

    Jag skulle gärna vilja veta.

    I'd really like to know.

Tip: gärna adds warmth — 'gladly'; stacks neatly with skulle vilja
