Asking Nicely with Skulle

The two request formulas — skulle du kunna and jag skulle vilja — drilled on the errands you actually run.

If you only ever learn two skulle patterns, make them these. Skulle du kunna + verb asks someone to do something; jag skulle vilja + verb asks for something yourself. Both are the polite default in shops, clinics and offices.

    Skulle du kunna skicka saltet?

    Could you pass the salt?

    Tip: skicka = pass, send

    Skulle du kunna säga till när vi är framme?

    Could you say when we're there?

    Tip: säga till = let someone know; framme = arrived

    Could I get a bag?

    Tip: the self-directed version: skulle jag kunna få

    Skulle det vara möjligt att boka om?

    Would it be possible to rebook?

    Tip: boka om = rebook; the om- prefix means 're-'

    Jag skulle vilja boka en tid.

    I'd like to book an appointment.

    Tip: en tid = an appointment slot, not 'a time'

    Jag skulle vilja ha notan, tack.

    I'd like the bill, please.

    Tip: notan = the restaurant bill; räkningen is a household bill

    Skulle du ha något emot att vänta en stund?

    Would you mind waiting a moment?

    Tip: ha något emot = to mind, to object to

    Skulle du kunna hjälpa mig ett ögonblick?

    Could you help me a moment?

    Tip: ett ögonblick = a moment, literally 'an eye-blink'

    Could we swap seats?

    Tip: byta plats = swap places

    Could you speak a bit more slowly?

    Tip: or just: förlåt?

    I'd need some help with this.

    Tip: skulle behöva softens 'I need' into 'I could do with'

    Would tomorrow work instead?

    Tip: gå bra = work out, be fine

    Could you hold the door?

    Tip: hålla upp = hold open

    I'd like to cancel my appointment.

    Tip: avboka = cancel a booking; boka av is not used

    Could you send an email?

    Tip: mejl is the normal spelling now, not mail

    Skulle det vara okej om jag tog med en vän?

    Would it be okay if I brought a friend?

    Tip: note the past tense tog after om — the unreal condition again
