Swedish Texting & Chat Slang

The abbreviations and slang Swedes actually use in SMS, Messenger and Slack — decode your Swedish group chat.

Written chat Swedish is its own dialect: heavy abbreviation, no capital letters, and slang that never appears in textbooks. These are the forms you'll actually see on your phone.

  1. 1

    asg

    laughing out loud (Swedish style)

Tip: Short for 'asgarv' — a roaring laugh. The Swedish LOL; 'garvar' = is laughing.

  2. 2

    oxå

    also / too (chat spelling)

Tip: Chat spelling of 'också'. 'jag kommer oxå'.

  3. 3

    btw / förresten

    by the way (abbreviation)

Tip: English 'btw' is common, but 'förresten' (frn) is the Swedish one.

  4. 4

    cs

    see you! (chat)

Tip: Short for 'ses' — 'vi ses'. 'cs imorn!' = see you tomorrow.

  5. 5

    imorn

    tomorrow (chat spelling)

Tip: Chat spelling of 'i morgon'. Also 'imon' among younger texters.

  6. 6

    ngn

    someone (abbreviation)

Tip: 'någon' → ngn, 'något' → ngt, 'några' → ngra. Everywhere in chat.

  7. 7

    osv

and so on / etcetera (abbreviation)

Tip: 'och så vidare' — used in formal writing too.

  8. 8

    iofs

for one's part / actually, come to think of it

Tip: 'i och för sig' — concedes a point: 'iofs har du rätt' = fair enough, you're right.

  9. 9

    vmk / vad jag vet

as far as I know (abbreviation)

Tip: 'vad jag vet' — often written out; the feeling of English 'afaik'.

  10. 10

    fett

    really / very (slang intensifier)

Tip: Literally 'fat': 'fett bra' = really good, 'fett kul' = great fun. Stockholm-flavoured.

  11. 11

    sjukt

    insanely / super (intensifier)

Tip: Literally 'sickly': 'sjukt gott' = insanely tasty. The all-purpose spoken intensifier.

  12. 12

    sååå bra

    sooo good (chat emphasis)

Tip: Swedes stretch vowels for emphasis instead of caps: 'jaaa', 'neeej', 'heeelt otroligt'.

  13. 13

    kram

    hug(s) (ending a message)

Tip: Standard warm sign-off, even between friends: 'kram!' or 'kramar'. Stronger: 'puss' (kiss).

  14. 14

    skämt åsido

was said as a joke / just kidding

Tip: 'joking aside'; plain 'jag skojar' = I'm kidding.

  15. 15

    ba

quote / literally said (chat marker)

Tip: Spoken quote-marker: 'han ba: nej' = he was like: no. From 'bara'.

  16. 16

    ingen fara

    no worries / it's fine

Tip: The standard reassurance; 'lugnt' or 'det är lugnt' is the slangier one.

  17. 17

    det är lugnt

it's cool / no problem (slang)

Tip: Literally 'it's calm'. Reply to an apology: 'lugnt!'

  18. 18

    vad gör du?

    what are you doing? (chat)

Tip: Often typed 'va gör du' or just 'gör du?' — chat drops letters aggressively.

  19. 19

    orka

    I don't have the energy / can't be bothered

Tip: 'orkar inte' → just 'orka!' as an exclamation = ugh, why bother. Peak Swedish.

  20. 20

    vad mysigt!

    how nice! / lovely!

Tip: 'mysigt' = cozy — the default positive reaction to plans, homes, photos.

  21. 21

    grattis

    congratulations (chat)

Tip: Note: two t:s, no 'l'. 'Stort grattis!' = big congrats.

  22. 22

    snälla

    please / pretty please (chat)

Tip: Literally 'kind (one)': 'snälla, kom' = please come. Swedish has no direct word for please.

  23. 23

    aa / okej

    OK / fine (casual agreement)

Tip: 'aa' = casual yes ('ja'). 'mm' also works as acknowledgement — not rude in Swedish.

  24. 24

    nä

    nah / no (casual)

Tip: Casual 'nej'. 'nä men' opens surprised remarks: 'nä men hej!' = well hello!

  25. 25

    asså

    damn / wow (mild exclamation)

Tip: Chat spelling of 'alltså' as an exclamation: 'asså jag dör' = omg I'm dying.

  26. 26

    puss o kram

    kisses and hugs (sign-off)

Tip: 'o' = 'och'. Close friends and family only — warmer than 'kram'.
