Turkish vowel harmony, explained on a whiteboard
A suffix copies the last vowel of the word. Two-way: e / a (evler, kitaplar). Four-way: i / ı / u / ü (ev mi, kitap mı).
Two-way harmony, used by suffixes like the plural -ler/-lar: if the last vowel is e, i, ö or ü, use e (evler, gözler). If it is a, ı, o or u, use a (kitaplar, okullar).
Four-way harmony, used by suffixes like the question particle mi: last vowel e or i → mi (ev mi?); a or ı → mı (kitap mı?); o or u → mu (okul mu?); ö or ü → mü (göz mü?).
