Word Order Traps
The word-order mistakes every Swedish learner makes: verb-second, inte in bisatser (BIFF), questions and indirect questions. Say them right until it hurts.
Swedish word order, trap by trap: the V2 law (front anything — igår, nu, i Sverige — and the verb still comes second), the subordinate-clause flip where inte jumps BEFORE the verb, the indirect-question trap (jag undrar var du bor — no inversion), inte's position around objects, and the sentence-starters that look alike but order differently: därför versus därför att, ju ... desto.

- 1
Igår åt jag middag med min familj.
Yesterday I had dinner with my family.
Tip: V2! Not 'Igår jag åt...' — the verb comes second.
- 2

Now I understand.
Tip: Fronted 'nu' pushes the verb before the subject.
- 3
I Sverige dricker folk mycket kaffe.
In Sweden people drink a lot of coffee.
Tip: Not 'I Sverige folk dricker...'
- 4

When I got home, I ate dinner.
Tip: A fronted clause counts as position one → verb next. Not '...hem, jag åt'.
- 5

If it rains, we'll stay home.
Tip: Not 'Om det regnar, vi stannar hemma.'
- 6

Because I was tired, I went home early.
Tip: Inversion after the fronted eftersom-clause.
- 7

I'm staying home because I'm not well.
Tip: BIFF: in a bisats, inte comes BEFORE the verb.
- 8

She says she doesn't want to come.
Tip: Not '...att hon vill inte komma' — BIFF.
- 9

I know you've never been there.
Tip: 'aldrig' behaves like 'inte': before the verb in a bisats.
- 10
Jag såg den inte.
I didn't see it. (the bus)
Tip: Unstressed pronoun object jumps in front of inte.
- 11
Han känner mig inte.
He doesn't know me.
Tip: Not 'Han känner inte mig' (that stresses ME of all people).
- 12
Jag såg inte filmen.
I didn't see the movie.
Tip: Noun objects stay after inte — only pronouns move.
- 13
Var bor du?
Where do you live?
Tip: No do-support: verb straight after the question word.
- 14
Vad gör du?
What are you doing?
Tip: Not 'Vad du gör?'
- 15
Talar du svenska?
Do you speak Swedish?
Tip: Yes/no questions start with the verb.
- 16
Jag undrar var du bor.
I wonder where you live.
Tip: Indirect question = bisats = NO inversion. Not '...var bor du'.
- 17
Jag vet inte vad jag ska göra.
I don't know what I should do.
Tip: Not '...vad ska jag göra.'
- 18

- 19

Tip: Never drop the dummy 'det'.
- 20

Tip: Not 'Är kallt ute' — Swedish clauses need a subject.
- 21

I have neither time nor money.
Tip: No 'inte' — varken...eller is already negative.
- 22

I haven't seen any car.
Tip: With two verbs you must split: inte ... någon, not 'ingen'.
- 23

He said he had no money left.
Tip: In a bisats 'ingen' must become inte ... någon.

Tip: The ju...desto frame — and inversion in the desto-half.
- 25

Tip: 'därför' = that's why (+inversion); 'därför att' = because.
- 26

I stayed home because it was raining.
Tip: Not bare 'därför det regnade'.
