Friendship Expressions

Barndomsvän, hålla kontakten, ställa upp — how Swedes talk about the people they keep.

An essay on adult friendship: the taxonomy (barndomsvän, nära vän, bekant, jobbarkompis, dagsvän), the Swedish pattern (svår att komma nära — men vän för livet sen; bli hembjuden as the milestone), the maintenance economics (vänskap kräver underhåll, "vi borde ses oftare", the numbers exchanged and never used), the endings (rinna ut i sanden — inget dramatiskt slut, bara färre meddelanden), the survivals (ett samtal om året räcker) — closing with the definition: glädjas utan avund, säga sanningen för att man kan. Det är en riktig vän. Och de är inte många.
