Condolences & Funeral Expressions

The careful, quiet Swedish of loss — mitt deltagande, gå bort, minnesstund.

What to say, and what happens, when someone dies in Sweden: the gentle verbs (gå bort before avlida), the condolence phrases (jag beklagar sorgen, jag har inga ord — which are words enough), the notice conventions (stilla i hemmet, omgiven av sin familj, en ceremoni i stillhet), the practical questions (vad ska man ha på sig? — vitt förekommer också), the honors (bära kistan — en ära att bli tillfrågad) — and the Swedish ending: kaffe och smörgåstårta, minnen och skratt, vilket är tillåtet. Sorg och tacksamhet på samma gång.
